Why the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP is the Perfect Travel Companion

Why the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP is the Perfect Travel Companion

Whether you travel frequently for business or you like to take vacations around the world with your friends or family, continuing to get a good night’s sleep when far from home is still vital for your overall wellbeing. Unfortunately, sleep apnea doesn’t take a vacation. Though many standard CPAP devices are FAA approved so you can take them with you on your travels, they tend to be much too bulky and cumbersome to pack in a suitcase.

Thankfully, CPAP device manufacturers understand the need for taking your therapy on the go. Portable systems like the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP ensure that you will never miss a night of treatment.

With a CPAP machine that is truly built for travel, you can sleep easy with the quality therapy that you need to manage your condition. Here’s why the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP makes an ideal traveling companion.

Designed For Travel

ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAPThe ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP is remarkably compact — in fact, it stands as the world’s smallest CPAP device. Weighing a mere 0.66 pounds, the unit measures 5.4 x 3.3 x 2.0 inches. In other words, it’s about the same size as an extra-thick smartphone. This convenient size makes it easy to slip the CPAP machine into your carry-on luggage or even a backpack or briefcase. Because the device is FAA approved, you can even use it on the airplane!

The ability to deliver a full-fledged CPAP experience in such a tiny package is possible thanks to ResMed’s ActiveAir technology. This unique system allows quiet and efficient performance — even in such a miniaturized device — by capping therapy flow even while therapy pressure increases. This ensures consistent delivery of the needed level of air pressure throughout the night.

Because the machine is designed for travel, it also comes with a premium travel bag to keep the device and its accessories protected while on the go. A hard travel case is also available. The ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP also comes with an external 20W power supply so you can plug it in when you arrive at your hotel. An AC adapter is also available, while a DC/DC converter is in development.

The device’s approach to using a humidifier also presents a more travel-friendly solution. The ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP is compatible with an exclusive portable humidification system that uses heat and moisture exchangers (HMEs) rather than a standard water chamber.

Known as HumidX and HumidX Plus, these components provide a waterless humidification system by capturing and storing the moisture that is released when you exhale. The HumidX and HumidX Plus’s paper ridges retain this moisture until you inhale, at which point the moisture is released so that you can breathe in humid air.

These small, removable humidification systems do not need to be washed, though they should be thrown away after 30 days. The HumidX is suited for most climates. However, if you are using your device in a dry or high altitude area (such as in the Arizona desert or while taking a red-eye flight), you should use the HumidX Plus, which is optimized for these more extreme conditions.

This low-maintenance humidifier alternative makes it much easier to set up and use your travel CPAP device. You won’t have to worry about cleaning out a humidifier water chamber each day, nor will you need to try to find distilled water to use with your device. Keep in mind, however, that HumidX and HumidX Plus waterless humidification is not available when using a full face mask.

App Power

As with other ResMed products, the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP is designed with today’s modern technologies in mind. The exclusive AirMini app downloads directly to your smartphone and allows you to pair your phone to your CPAP machine with wireless Bluetooth tech.

Compatible for both iOS and Android, the app is designed to help you from the moment you take your device out of the box. A step by step guide helps you set up the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP with your required therapy settings, as well as check for proper mask fit. This way, you can have confidence that your device is properly set up and ready for you to use.

By linking your CPAP device to your smartphone, you can control device settings from the palm of your hand, starting and stopping your treatment and making adjustments as needed to ensure a more comfortable sleep experience. Of course, you can still control these settings manually if you prefer.

Finally, the AirMini app helps keep you on track with your progress in using the device, providing a 30 day history of your therapy, as well as a score that breaks down your sleep in an easy to understand way. By clearly presenting information such as usage hours, mask seal quality, and the number of sleep apnea events experienced during the night, you will be better motivated to stay on task with your treatment.

Pick Your Mode

Another unique attribute of the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP is that you get access to all three therapy modes available in the AirSense 10 series: CPAP, AutoSet, and AutoSet for Her. Regardless of which therapy mode is needed to deliver comfortable and effective treatment for you, this travel-sized device gives you access to it. You can also enable SmartStart so that the device will automatically begin therapy after you take your first breath while wearing the mask.

  • CPAP: The standard CPAP mode offers fixed-pressure air delivery. This is the standard type of therapy that is prescribed to most patients, including those just beginning treatment. However, ResMed’s standard CPAP devices utilize the AutoRamp feature to improve comfort. This system provides a low start pressure for when you first put on the mask. By monitoring the user’s breathing patterns, the device can identify when the user has fallen asleep. AutoRamp then gradually increases the pressure until it reaches the prescribed level to ensure a sound night’s sleep.
  • AutoSet: As the name implies, the AutoSet setting automatically adjusts air pressure delivery throughout the night. Using an advanced algorithm, this setting allows the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP to adapt therapy pressure based on the detected needs of the user. This ensures that the device delivers the lowest pressure required to prevent obstructive sleep apnea incidents at any time, resulting in more comfortable breathing.
  • AutoSet for Her: Men are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea than women, and as a result, the unique therapy needs of female sleep apnea patients have often gone overlooked. The AutoSet for Her setting seeks to rectify this problem by using a gender specific algorithm that offers greater sensitivity to flow limited breathing. As with the standard AutoSet system, AutoSet for Her automatically adjusts to the user’s breathing patterns to optimize the comfort and effectiveness of therapy.

Because of its unique size and configuration, the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP is only compatible with four specialty masks: the AirFit F20, the AirTouch F20, the AirFit N20, and the AirFit P10 for AirMini. These masks are designed to work with the unique specifications of the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP, including the HumidX and HumidX Plus additions. Other masks are not designed with the device’s ActiveAir technology in mind, which makes them incompatible.

As full face masks, the AirFit F20 and the AirTouch F20 are not compatible with the HumidX and HumidX Plus systems. The AirFit N20 is a nasal mask, while the AirFit P10 for AirMini is a nasal pillow. Be mindful of your mask preferences and humidification needs when determining which option will work best for your travel therapy.

Caring For Your ResMed AirMini AutoSense Travel CPAP

HumidXAs with any other CPAP device, providing proper care and maintenance for the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP will go a long way in ensuring that you get optimal treatment.

In general, you should follow the same recommendations for replacing device components as you would with a standard CPAP device. Tubing should typically be replaced every three to six months, full face mask cushions should be replaced once a month, and nasal mask cushions and nasal pillows should be replaced twice a month. Following regular replacement schedules will ensure hygienic use of your device and help you avoid common side effects like sore throat and colds.

Because the ResMed AirMini AutoSense Travel CPAP uses the proprietary HumidX and HumidX Plus devices, a few adaptations need to be made to the daily cleaning routine. All masks can be disconnected from the device by pressing their side buttons and gently pulling away. Twisting the mask away from its tubing will disconnect these parts.

If you use a HumidX or HumidX Plus with your mask, you must remove it from the vent module before washing the mask. These parts do not need to be washed, and could actually be damaged by too much exposure to water. They should be kept in a dry, clean area while other parts are being washed.

Once the mask has been fully disconnected from the rest of the system, hand wash it with warm water and a mild cleaning detergent. The vent holes and connectors should be scrubbed with a soft bristle brush, after which the mask should be rinsed under running water and air dried out of direct sunlight.

During this cleaning, check the mask connectors for dirt blockages or other signs of damage. If the connector is damaged, it will need to be replaced. Otherwise, it should last for approximately six months.

Though the AirMini tubing only needs to be cleaned once a week, you should still inspect if for holes or tears on a daily basis. Tubing should be soaked in warm water and mild detergent, rinsed well, and then hung up to air dry in a way that allows both ends of the tubing to drain any water that might still be inside. When cleaning the tubing, it’s also a good idea to give the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP a quick cleaning with a dry cloth to prevent dust buildup.

All in all, caring for the ResMed AirMini AutoSet Travel CPAP is fairly straightforward. In many ways it is actually easier than caring for other CPAP devices. The air filter does not need to be washed; it should instead be inspected periodically for damage and replaced after six months. Similarly, the HumidX and HumidX Plus inserts do not need to be washed, only replaced after 30 days.

A more streamlined approach to maintenance will make it that much easier to fit CPAP therapy into your busy travel schedule.
